Public Health Alert: Rabid bat found near Husky Stadium

Dear Members of the UW Community,

On Saturday, May 19, a member of the UW community was bitten after picking up a bat near Union Bay behind Husky Stadium. The bat tested positive for rabies, a central nervous system viral disease that can be lethal if transmitted to humans.

We would like to remind students, faculty, staff and visitors to avoid contact with wildlife. Bats are known carriers of rabies in Washington state and should be avoided. You should never touch a bat (alive or dead) to avoid potential exposure to rabies.

The rabies virus exists in the saliva of an infected animal, which can be transmitted to humans through a bite or scratch. A person who contracts rabies may not survive if they do not receive prophylactic treatment. Therefore, anyone who touches a bat with bare skin or finds a bat at home should be evaluated by a doctor as soon as possible after the encounter. Death from rabies can be prevented if treatment begins before symptoms appear. Once symptoms of rabies appear, the disease is almost always fatal.

If you have been bitten or scratched by a bat, or had bare skin contact with a bat, Public Health — Seattle & King County recommends that you seek medical treatment immediately.

To avoid exposure to rabies:

[*]Avoid bare skin contact with bats.
[*]Use thick gloves if you must capture a live bat or handle a dead bat.
[*]Vaccinate your pets against rabies.
[*]Teach children to avoid contact with wild animals, including bats (alive or dead).
[*]Keep bats out of your home.
[*]Although bats are the only known carriers of rabies in Washington state, the vast majority of bats in our state do not have rabies. They are an essential part of our ecosystem by pollinating flowers, dispersing seeds and controlling insect populations.

For more information on what to do if you encounter a bat, please visit Public Health — Seattle & King County’s website at www.kingcounty.gov/bats or call 206.296.4774.

Sincerely,

Jude Van Buren, Dr.PH, MPH
